Your account
- Give us accurate information and keep your password secret. You are responsible for what happens under your account.
- Tell us straight away if you think someone else has used your account.
- You may delete your account at any time by contacting us; see the Privacy Policy for what happens to your data.
Books and licences
Every book page shows where the book comes from and under which rights it is offered.
- Public domain books are works we believe are free of copyright in the United States (for example, books published before 1931). You may read, download and share them for personal use. Copyright terms differ between countries, so a work that is free in one country may still be protected in yours. Please check your local law before copying or republishing a book.
- Openly licensed books (for example Creative Commons) are offered under the licence shown on the book page. You must follow that licence, including any requirement to credit the author and to share adaptations under the same terms. Books licensed for non-commercial use only are offered free of charge and are never sold.
If you believe a book on the site infringes your rights, see Copyright & Takedown.
Document templates
Templates (for example contracts, acts and CVs) are starting points that you can edit and export. They are not legal advice and are not a substitute for a lawyer. Laws differ between countries and situations, so you are responsible for checking that a document is suitable and lawful for your use. We give no promise that any template will be valid, complete or enforceable where you live.
You own the documents you create. You give us permission to store them so that we can show them back to you, and we do not read or use them for any other purpose.
Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- break the law or infringe someone else’s rights;
- resell books, or remove notices that show a book’s source or licence;
- use bots, scrapers or other automated tools to bulk-download our library, or to overload the site;
- try to gain access to accounts, systems or data that are not yours, or to bypass security checks;
- upload or create documents that are unlawful, abusive or contain malware.
Intellectual property
The site’s design, software, text and graphics belong to us or our licensors. Books and covers belong to their respective authors, publishers or the public domain. Descriptions of books are provided as general information only. Names such as “Project Gutenberg”, “Internet Archive” and “OpenStax” belong to their owners; we use them only to say where a work comes from and we are not affiliated with them.
Disclaimers
The site and its content are provided “as is” and “as available”. We work to keep the library accurate, but we do not promise that books are error-free, complete or free of copyright in every country, or that the site will always be available. Nothing here limits rights you have by law that cannot be excluded, such as consumer rights.
Limitation of liability
To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, or for loss of profit, data or opportunity. Our total liability for any claim relating to the site is limited to USD 50, because the site is provided free of charge. We do not exclude liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be excluded.
Suspension and termination
We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms or the law, after warning you where that is reasonable. You may stop using the site at any time.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. The date at the top shows the latest version. If a change is significant we will tell registered users by email or a notice on the site. Continuing to use the site after a change means you accept it.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the country where the operator is established. If you are a consumer, you also keep the protection of the mandatory consumer laws of the country where you live, and you may bring a claim in the courts of that country.
