About this book

Painter’s third volume brings Italian and French prose tales into English for Elizabethan readers, drawing on writers such as Boccaccio, Bandello, Cinthio, Straparola, and Marguerite of Navarre. One narrator condemns the Countess of Celant’s violence before turning to a love match whose story ends in murder. In “The Lord of Virle,” Zilia speaks to a knight unable to answer her, making a closed-room encounter tense with old loyalties and danger. Elsewhere, Salimbene argues that mercy toward an enemy is more honorable than taking pleasure in his misfortune.
