About this book
William of Rubruck’s account records his Franciscan mission among the Mongols from 1253 to 1255, reporting to Louis IX on their lands, rulers, and Christian communities. At a khan’s palace, Rubruck’s companion is refused entry after stepping on the threshold, while Rubruck decides to go in and pray for the ruler. His account of that uneasy audience shows how religious purpose and close observation meet in his dealings with Mongol power.
