Mighty Mikko; a book of Finnish fairy tales and folk tales

About this book

For readers drawn to traditional Finnish storytelling, Parker Hoysted Fillmore’s collection brings fairy tales and folk tales together, often setting ordinary people against supernatural demands or household mischief. When a lake spirit seizes a farmer by the beard, the bargain he faces gives the tale an unsettlingly practical turn. By contrast, Veikko’s effort to escort a mouse in a tiny coach becomes unexpectedly tender after a passerby knocks it into the river. The narration stays direct, and the story of Susanna shows its comic side through her husband’s elaborate worry that her loose tongue will cost him a buried treasure.
